I have a mercruiser 5.0L 305 V8....
Recently it had about 4 quarts of water in the oil, and soft siezed. I put a wrench on the front bolt and got it free. I pulled all spark plugs. One drained like a faucet and all had water on them. I pulled the head off the side that drained water out and found a bad head gasket and lots of water in the all 4 cylinders on that side (puddles, about a half a cup). The gasket was only bad in one cylinder. The one that drained all the water out.

Why would all the cylinders have water in them??

Re: Water in all the wrong places...

If you're lucky it was just water from the jackets when you removed the head.
I doubt this is the case though.
Otherwise, warped or cracked head, and/or exhaust manifold and/or riser. Since you can turn the motor, I doubt it is the block.

Take the head to a machine shop and have them put a straight edge on it.
I'm guessing you probably ran it hot and warped the head. The machine shop can fix this.
