Water in bellows...

So I drained my stern drive to check out the oil in there first, it came out beautifully looking like it should...
So then I removed the 6 nuts and washers from the bellhousing to get my stern drive off and water started to pour out; about a cup and a half. I got the drive off and there is a bit of rust on the end cap of one of the u-joints. I guess I'm going to have to replace both the u-joints after all! Argh, there goes another $100. The gimbal bearing is real bad too... It got late, so I quit for the night.
Should I also get new yokes? They seem to be fine...

Re: Water in bellows...

The boat is an 89, but the drive is a reman. from a company called PMC (I think). It has a serial number from them and a phone # to call, but I didn't think of anything worth while to call them with for questions... The drive itself seems fine, the oil was great. I haven't gotten the u-joints bellow off yet to see if thats where the water was coming from or if it was thru the motor side. I just picked up both u-joints. I hope I got the right ones. NAPA part #18-2104.

Well, that's good, no water in the drive.....
You should consider getting a new yoke seal though....
It was probably damage from the water in the bellows....
The only way water can get in the bellows is either thropgh the drive & yoke seal, the bellows itself of if the boat is submerged enough for water to get past the input shaft......;)
