I been working on a '83 90 hp inline 6 off and on for the llast 8 months. One problem led to another. Put a complete water pump in it and the base assembly did not seem to seal at the bottem. After completing the job the motor crank right up and it started peeing but I found water coming out the lower two spark plugs. Could the base assembly not sealing cause this or could it be the head gasket? Before this problem the compression showed 130-129 on all cylinder. I have not check the compression since this happened

They dont have head gaskets, check seal on divider plates.

Re: water in cylinder

Cajun means that the inner water jacket cover, under the exhaust cover or the exhaust baffle, which is also under the exhaust cover could be leaking. Since it is the two lower cylinders leaking water, the lower crankcase seals could be bad. These are located in the lower endcap of the crankcase.

That motor has no cylinder head and no divider plate. Water is actually coming out of the spark plug holes, or is it leaking around the spark plugs? Completely different issues.

As the motor was running water was comming from around the spark plug.

I bought this boat to learn about working on outboards. I going to try to make time to pull the exhaust cover off and take a look. How hard is this job and what Damage should I look for under the cover. The lower crankcase seals looks like it might be a tough job; might wait and learn more about this. Any advise will help.

More likely the water jacket cover is leaking around the spark plugs, fairly easy fix if its a fresh water motor.

I have been reading old posts and found one talking about using JB weld to seal a leak of the water jacket cover. It seems like an easey fix. If anyone has used this method, how long can this hold and what risks should I kook for? I hesitate using JB becouse it is so hard to remove. Is there a good sealant that be easier to work with?

I always used silicone caulk. Dry out the area, apply the caulk around the spark plug and let it cure, before use....

Don't know much about silicone caulk for motors. Where can get some and is there a certain type I should look for?

Nah, use whatever you have laying around. House stuff is fine.

Re: water in cylinder

I put some high temp. silicone around the leaking plugs. The 4th and 5th stopped leaking. The botton plug still has a small drip. I must not have cleaned it very well. Plan on pulling the plug and try again. This was better than pulling the cover off. Thanks for the advice. Is this a fix I should check on a regular bases or do I only need to reaply the silicone with each plug change

Re: water in cylinder

Why not just get the $8.00 gasket and fix it for good?

It is not a hard job and does not require power-head removal. That way you don't have to mess with silicone every time you check or pull plugs..

Re: water in cylinder

I have read of too many people breaking bolts when taking off the cover. Do not have the time now to repair broken bolts.
