I have a 1979 Glastron with GM v8 898 tried to start boat starter just spun plastic geers were striped out, had that fixed would engage but not turn motor over, took plugs out water in almost all cylinder, shot some oil in and turned it over a few times. My son in law had it out the week before he said it ran fine. Can water get in cylinders when not running? Any help would be great thanks.

Re: Water in cylinder?

Yes, water can get into the cylinders a number of ways, especially if the exhaust shutters are bad. Shutting the engine off while still moving and the wake hits the transom, shutting the engine off at to high an rpm or not allowing to cool down can cause it to diesel which can draw water into the cylinders. Defective manifolds, elbows, or gaskets between them. To much weight on the transom............

Yep as Don says. Exhaust issue is the most common reason. Bad manifolds/risers/missing shutters. reversion. You have some looking to do.

Hope you're not in saltwater, or that week of saltwater in your cylinders could be a death sentence to your engine.
