Had already replaced head gasket Gasket was bad. Impeller was shot. Got this motor from a friend on an old pontoon. If I pull head again what exactly do I need to look for

If the waterpump was shot it is a good bet that the head warped from being overheated.

Pulled the head. Water in #3. Bottom cylinder. Checked the head best I could with straight edge and feeler. Can pass a :002 feeler under some areas but not .004. I’m worried it may be based gasket. I did not use any sealant on the head gasket. Also noticed I had installed gasket with numbers toward the block. Not sure if it matters. I appreciate any advice. No machine shops near me. Should I try glass and sandpaper on the head? I’ll try to upload pics.

Do not.put sealer on t he head gasket. The head needs to be resurfaced, yes you can use glass and sand paper

Thanks for the response. I appreciate you. I’ll let you know how it goes
several folks say add sealer. Can it hurt.

Isn't the 89 60 hp a 56 cid So it has just a water jacket gasket
Yep you correct as brain fart. Exhaust cover has just a water gasket as exhaust runner cast into block. Dang I need to lay off this watermelon shine …..
