water in cylinder

I have a 1986 Evinrude 110 V4 crossflow. I went out yesterday and could not get RPMs up. Still wanting to fish I idled to my spot. After getting there and putting some lines in the water I pulled the spark plugs thinking they were fouled (I am premixing oil and running the VRO to verify the pump is working). I found signs of water on the lower left plug (facing the back of the motor)and the other plugs pretty fouled. I put another set of plugs in and continued fishing ( I did manage to catch one 18" striper ). I got back in slow and steady again and checked plugs again, still water on the one cylinder. I checked compression and it was about 130. I pulled the head gasket hoping to see definite signs of failure but the ring looked intact. Is it possible the water is coming from the exhaust manifold area, or am I just not seeing where the head gasket is leaking? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

BK '68,

Head gaskets can be tricky that way. You would swear by looking at them that they are OK, and they're not.

Re: water in cylinder

i had similar problem with my 1973 50hp twin cylinder... water was shootin out cyl number 2.. replace head gasket and head cover hasket to no avail... turns out it was the "exhaust cover" or exhaust manifold, i ont even know the true name... but its the water jacket for the exhaust,,,, its a pretty common cause of water in the cylinder other than the head gasket

mikey :p

That was my thought also. I purchased a head gasket today, now I just need a break in the weather. Hopefully my next post will be good news.

Re: water in cylinder

The only good news is the sun came out. I installed the new head gasket but still think it is not making power on one cylinder. It fired right up but when I pulled plug wires still no change when that cylinder was pulled. I could not tell if water was present will know when I put it in the water on Sunday. The RPMs dropped and almost stalled when I pulled the right bank coil wires, it did nowt seem to drop as bad when I pulled the top left wire. When I pulled the bottom left wire there was no change. I am assuming water is entering that cylinder still. I also switched coils and plug wires to see if the problem moved and it didn't. I was not able to switch power packs because my right side pack is hard wired in (another problem I have had). So I am thinking a water run will confirm if water is still entering the cylinder or if now I have a bad pack keeping me from running right. If it is water should I look at the exhaust water jacket next? I forgot to mention I have 115 PSI on the problem cylinder. Sorry If the post is too lengthy.
B

Re: water in cylinder

I believe my motor is a different style (crossflow). When I pulled my exhaust cover of I found the rings broke on that cylinder. I believ it to be from the water intrussion causing a hydrolock. I have since had the motor rebuilt and it is now running great. Godd luck on fixing your problem.
Brian
