Water in Engine

I have a 4.3GL 2001 model. I have had it out in the water 4 times this year. I was out yesterday and the motor just stopped. I opened the engine cover and the dreaded white foam (oil and water) was covering the top of my motor. It had blown out the carberator. I got a tow and when I got home made a couple of calls. Two different guys told me it was the intake gasket. I want to know if you think they are right. I have the intake off now and am going to get a new gasket. I then have to do the multiple oil change routine to get all of the nasty stuff out.

Thanks
Chris

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,....
Can you See the Failure in the gasket,..??

Now that you Opened it, you can't pressure test for the Leak......
Are there any Cracks in the bottom of the Intake,..??
How about in the Lifter Valley,..??

Re: Water in Engine

Although I've never heard it discussed in relation to water in engine, but... what you said about the carb spitting it out gets me thinking about the timing chain giving it up, like she's spitting when she should be sucking lol... as in bad valve timing? jumped chain?

I'm with the other guys that replied but, one thing for sure. The gasket is the cheapest way to go first but inspect the old one very well before peeling in off. Has this engine ever been overheated to any great degree, if so, it may be that the head is cracked or warped. Hope its only a gasket, good luck..........

Re: Water in Engine

I had the intake off and the gasket came off in three sections when I pulled it off. I checked all I could for cracks in the intake but did not see any. I installed a new Felpro gasket and put it back together. I have changed the oil and filter (ran inbetween each time) three times. I am now getting really pretty and clean foamy oil. I dont know what I am doing at this point. It does If I put in 5 quarts of oil and a filter I am only getting back 5 quarts but it looks just like milk. I am taking it into the Volvo service guys to have them check it out. I am at my whits end with this boat. Anyone know someone who wants a 01 Crownline. I kinow this little trip into service is going to really cost me.

As far as I know the motor has never been overheated. The boat has an extensive service history and the shop that did the services said that I got a good deal (only had it a couple of weeks). Upgraded from Bayliner, people can say what they want about bayliners but in my experience they are bulletproof.

I just took it to the Volvo service center. They were baffeled that it happened on the 4th time out. They were also baffled about where the sludge that came from the engine was coming out of. It was coming out of the tubes that connect the exhaust manifolds to the flame arrestor on the top of the engine. They are going to take it apart and see what they find.

Ayuh,... The manufacturer of the Hull is Totally Irrevelant to whether the motor/ drive has Problems or not...

Crownline is many Classes above a Bilgeliner...

I can Agree with That....

If you wanta save a Ton of Cash,...
The Manuals are up in the Adults Only section,+ We'll walk ya thru it...

I'd start with air pressure tesing the cooling system... Sounds like a Cracked block so far....

Re: Water in Engine

Alright lets see if the pic attached. On top of the exhaust manifold there is a cast iron box that is held on with 4 long pass through bolts. It is from this box where the exhaust turns back. There is a rubber tube that is coming out of each box and goes under the carb cover and attaches to the arrestor (loosely) there is where the oil and water combination was coming out of and getting on top of the motor. I attached a pic of a motor just like mine.

And I do know that the Hull and engine makes are irrelevant. I was just frustrated and annoyed. I have calmed down now.

Re: Water in Engine

I just want to say thanks for everyones help so far. I usually do not fix the boat myself. I will let everyone know what the service center says. I might need a lot of help.

Thank You
Chris

Re: Water in Engine

Those hoses have one way check valves in them to pull exhaust gases. If water is coming out of them I'd suspect bad risers or manifolds.

Re: Water in Engine

Since you have the intake manifold off, look at the engine side of the manifold on the front for a crack under the thermostat housing. There is a section of the manifold that has to be drained seperately during winterizing, if you forgot to drain it, it will crack the manifold.
This is from the service manual.

When draining the 4.3GXi-A and the 4.3GL, be sure to remove the
intake manifold drain plug, located behind the alternator tensioning
bracket, to drain any remaining water in the intake manifold. Otherwise,
follow the directions below.

Re: Water in Engine

I agree with Don, as long as you have the intake off, check the valley very carefully for cracks in the water jackets. Look for evidence of water too, rust, milkshake, etc.
