water in engine

I recently bought a 91 Vip Vision, the previous owner had a new exhaust manifold put on because the old was cracked and leaking water into the motor. The motor is a Mercruiser 3.0, all stock as far as I can tell.
I changed the oil in it twice this weekend and still have moisture in the oil, what is the best way to get it all out? The motor sounds fine and the shop that fixed the manifold said they could find any cracks.

vipzach

the real question is ,is water still getting into the motor ?

when you change the oil is it getting better ? or staying the same

how and how long long are you running the motor it can take a long time for the oil to get hot enough to evaporate the water that is still in the motor

tommays

I have not run the motor after changing it, only turned it over to try and get all the water, I still still have to drain a 1/2 tank of two year old gas before running it. Do you know of a faster way of draing the besides hand pumping it or draining it to the bottum of my boat. Each time the oil was not as milky as the time before

Wait until you can run the motor before going further with oil changes.Generally then you can run for 15 to 20 minutes, change oil AND filter, and repeat 3 times. This usally does the trick. If the oil stays just as milky you have other problems. Also you'll find the warm engine fluid pumps and drains alot better.

DHP

You need to run the motor as soon as possible and get the water out. Water in the engine can do damage to a lot of different parts. You can hook a gas can up and run it without messing with draining the fuel tank. The mechanic should have taken care of the water in the motor when he changed out the manifold.

Re: water in engine

can I run the motor without damaging it severely? I know rust will not help the motor, I just don't want to ruin something running it with water in it, a friend suggested pouring denatured alcohol in it

vipzack

do you have muffs to put on the put on the outdrive to supply water?

i am only asking because i have no idea if you have owned a boat before and dont want to assume you no all the ins and outs

no one can say exactly what will happen but if you dont run the motor and supply it with cooling water it will never recover from its current condition

did the motor get freeze damage ? it sounds like its got a good amount of water in it

tommays

I have a set of muffs, this is the first boat I have owned, I've done alot of car motor work and know they aren't exactly the same but similar, I don't know if it has freeze damage or how to even tell

I Really Hope that I'm Wrong................... :(

But, The way I see what happened is;

The previous owner Froze the Boat.....
The outside Damage was the Manifold.... Had to be Freeze Damage... Not much Saltwater in OK......
Those are Really the Only 2 possibilities to explain replacing a manifold on a 91 3.0l....

The Other Most Common place for a 3.0l to Crack is at the Core Plugs.....
There should be 2 or 3 of them along the side of the block, Under the Manifold.............
Do your Core Plugs look OEM, or have they been molested, chipped paint ? different color ??

The Next Most Common place is the Otherside of this Same waterjacket... The Oil Side.....
That's the Bad News Side..........
There's only 2 ways I know of to tell.......
1 is to Hang the motor on a stand,+ Pull the Base,& Look.............
The other possibility is to pop the core plugs out,+ see if it's visable from there...........

I'm Sorry,.... It Sounds like you've bought an Abused Boat...... I wish you the Best of Luck.......

To answer your Next Question,..............
No....... There are No Automotive Engines that'll fit...............

I've seen them Glued back together,+ Run darn near Forever..... Usually the Crack is on the Outside, rather than the Oil side......
For the price of a base gasket,+ a tube of JB weld, You Might get an Hour,...... Or, 500hrs.......

Like I said, I Hope I'm Wrong........

Re: water in engine

helo
could be damage could be the oil has never been warm enough to burn off the moisture. the t-stst is only about 140*.
its to easy to pressure test the system. thats what I would do be fore removing everything. the other common freeze crack spot on that motor is just above the lifters. you have to remove the lifter covers to find them. but like I say, pressure testing the cooling system is rather easy.

I had the same issue with a boat I recieved. I was able to run off the 4 yr old gas no problem, however it took about 4-5 oil changes and a couple cans of seafoam for all the water to boil out of the oil. Also buy a couple cheap oil filters for the process as well, the milky oil crud will settle in the iol filter, so during your next change, it will just kick back up and make the process longer.
