Water in fuel..

Hi I'm new here and looking for some guidance and help. I apologize if this post gets a bit lengthy.

Although I didn't see this happen, this is what I think happened. My boat became wedged under my dock and the rear end became swamped. The engine didn't go under, my bildge was filled, had I not walked out to the dock in the morning the boat would have sank.

Long story short, I had the carbs cleaned and my fuel/water separtor filter was filled with water. Even after dumping the filter numerous times it was still filled with water. I hired a company to come out yesterday to filter the tank and after removing over 15 gallons of water the guy gave up since he didn't have enough storage for what was being pumped in need of disposal.

We tried to test some more and it seems that the entire tank is filled with water. I just bought this boat about two months ago (used) with little if any fuel in it. I filled the tank and added oil when i bought it, and it powers an older evinrude 2 stroke.

Now my boat didn't go 'that far' under. I'm unsure if the water came in from the gas vent or not. In any case I'm at a loss to what happened to all the fuel/oil mix that was in that tank? No fuel/oil in the bildge. There was no sign of any fuel/oil in the water however it could have gone out with the tide. I've been running it with an on-deck tank and have bypassed the fuel tank. Do you think this was a fluke? The boat ran fine of course prior to this. Now I don't know if I should just pump the remaining water out and try again or just continue using an external tank? I'm not sure what size fuel tank I have.. I'd have to say approx 40 gallons.

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for replying!

Re: Water in fuel..

If you have access to open the tank..... with the boat on a trailer..... take the fuel out and it will settle and separate. The water will settle to the bottom. I would empty the tank and use a water separator.

There is no quick fix or easy way out of this.

Probably came in through the vent

Re: Water in fuel..

Thanks Bob, the problem is there is NOTHING at all to separate. After 30 mins of using a pump/filter system yesterday there was NO fuel at all.. only water. I'm just at a loss on where all that fuel/oil mix went. I guess I'll empty the tank and try again but this time i'll only put in about 15 gallons of gas at first and will monitor my fuel water separator. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.
