My boat swamped while I was away for 3 weeks. I had about 25 gallons of gas and now have an unknown quantity of water also in the tank. What is the best way to dispose of the tank contents? The gas tank is not removable.

Re: Water in Gas Tank

Swantzilla, The gas will float above the water. The best way is to remove the fuel guage sender, and raise the bow. Now stick a siphon hose into the bottom rear of the tank and start the siphon. The water will come out first, followed by any gas that is left. if you pour it into a clear jar (5 gal water cooler jug??), you will see the waterline. Pour off the gas and dispose of the water any way you want. Sniff the gas to see if it is OK, and toss in some dry-gas to remove any residual water.

I just hooked an Electric Fuelpump to the Out-side of the Fuel Filter,+ the hose Out of the fuelpump back into the Tank Fill..........
Run it awhile off a battery,+ then shut it down,+ pour the contents of the Fuel Filter into that Clear Jar Chris mentioned,......
Keep doing that till Clear Gas comes out........

I did it on a trailer,+ shifted the boat around a couple times,.....

Just a random factoid. I have a sports field maintenance book that shows where sucking in a mouthfull of 2,4,D is officially rated less harmfull than sucking in a mouthfull of gasoline. I once mistook my beer bottle full of acetone for my beer bottle full of beer. That was a surprise! Sam

Sam, I use one of those "shake-shake" siphons. When you use one it looks kinda funny :^(not ha-ha funny), but my mouth is gas-free!d:)

but, note that, if you have E-10 fuel (ethanol mixture), don't use the gasoline. Ethanol absorbs water, but separates under certain conditions, leaving an ethanol/water mixure underneath a layer of reduced-octane gasoline. In that case, you might want to ask your fire department for disposal instructions.
