water in gas

I recently purchased a 1977 Silverton 28 Convertible that was stored in the water over the winter. when I bought it 1 tank had about 5 gals. and the other about 70 both tanks hold 75 gals. each. for the 1st weekend out I put about 19 gals in the empty tank and topped off the other one. I ran for about 3hrs and the one that was empty for the winter. When that tank was empty I switched tanks a few mins later the engine died. Had to be towed back in luckily I wasn't far from the marina I had a worker tow me w/ the yard boat. Well I get back in and found that was water in the tank so I siphoned the tank from the pickup until no more water came out (just gas). Then I started the engine and let it run for a good 1/2 hr. Ran great so I went out for another ride. As soon as I trimed out the motor died again (2nd tow of the day) I got the boat back in and decided to give up for the day. I went back today and ran the motor again for about 45mins. Started up 1st try but after shutting down the engine I siphoned out some more gas and water was still in the lines. I don't know how the engine was running w/ so much water (the fuel from the lines was white) anyway I was wondering if I empty out the tank from the pickup and then fill up w/ fresh gas and some "dry Gas" if it would possible solve my problem.

Re: water in gas

Welcome Sk8trfred.

Hopefully removing as much of the water as possible will solve the problem.

When you get it emptied, only put about 3 gallons of gas in the tank, just in case there is still water in there and you have to drain it again. No sense in ruining any more gas than necessary.

You might want to disconnect the fuel lines and pump the bad fuel out of them, rather than running it thru your engine.

Let us know how it work out.

Re: water in gas

Also I heard from a marine store today that the old gas that was put in last year was "MTBE" and the new gas w/ Ethanol (that I put in) is bad to mix. could the new gas be causing this problem?

Re: water in gas

If you have mtbe gas, get rid of it.

Have read reports that mixing the two can cause problems, don't know if it is true.

Mixing them won't create water in the gas though. :)
