Water in Hull of Aquasport

A few months ago I bought my first boat in 30 years, a mid-80s Aquasport 25 footer that appeared to be clean and in good condition. I keep it in the water, and within a couple of months I noticed the boat slightly listing to starboard. That's where the kicker is, plus the cockpit, etc., so at first I thought I just hadn't noticed this slight list before, and that it was likely just due to uneven loading.

Then the list became more pronounced and couldn't be ignored. I pulled the boat out of the water and looked the hull over. Didn't see any problems. But a few days later, when sanding the hull in prep for bottom paint, I saw water seeping out of two spots, on the starboard hull bottom (the heavy, listing side). When pressed with a thumb, these spots feel
wet and soft like foam. They appeared to be spots where a previous sander went right through the outer glass. But, the outer glass is amazingly thin in these spots. An old patch, maybe?

I don't know the hull construction of these boats. Is it solid glass, except for narrow foam and wood stringers? Or what? And what do you think is going on here? How big of a problem might I have?

All Aquasport boats are built with a composite core construction. Simply put this is a glass over foam construction for the stringers. There is no wood used.

Thanks LCM-8. In other words, there is foam sandwiched throughout the hull, or foam only in the stringers? And what do you suspect is happening here, and is there a cure that doesn't involve dynamite?

A little C-4 on that soft spot should take care of it.

Here is what I would do to find out how much water is in it.

I used to do this with old B. Whalers as once they pick up water between the inner and outer hull its there to stay. But since there is no wood there is nothing to rot out. As long as the boat isn't too heavy you just live with it.

Weigh the boat. If I knew exactly the year and model I could tell you about what it should weigh.

Better check closly...the older Aquasports are not all composite construction. Maybe some "mid 80s" are but a friend of my has (I think he said a 1987) 24 Weekender or Fisherman with wood stringers and wood transom. I didn't talk with him about other places that might use wood.

He had the transom replaced ($2500)3 yrs ago and noted the wood stringers were glassed on the ends before the transom was put in, which saved them from rot. I know the older Aquasports have wood because I worked in their R&D department back in the mid 70s at the Hialeah plant.

My friend also replaced the aluminum tank about two weeks ago and it was foamed in between the stringers. Blown foam just like they were doing in the early days. He REALLY likes the boat and has done the Bahamas in it several times a year since new.

Bill

Guys, I stand corrected...I just called my friend for details and his boat is an 87 WELLCRAFT Sportsman, not an Aquasport. Must have been one of those senior moments and I had the brands confused. Too many boats on the brain.

Bill
