Ok I fear I had done something very wrong so Im asking for help:

I changed the VRO to a standard gas pump, all was good. Tested and ran fine with muffs.

Were not allowed to use motors right now due to social distancing, so decided to also change lower unit oil.
It looked fine, nice deep blue color.

Motor has not been used in 2 years. I replaced the oil with Lucas 80/90 as recommended by a local mechanic. I have tested the motor a few more times to make sure all is well with the fuel pump change over....

Now I went and checked the lower unit oil, and it is egg nog. I did check the pump bottle and low and behold there is contamination in it. Not a lot but some ( I probably pumped it into the out drive ) I drained it all out let it set for a few hours. Refilled , started engine and ran it in gear with the muffs on for about 2 minutes, shut it down and there was again cloudy (not as bad) lower unit oil.

Three things have I screwed something up, even though it was working great till I changed it?
Could my well be pushing water around the water pump seals?
Could this just be left over from the sides of the lower unit?

Help please,,,, just in case I ever get to use a motor here again

Take the lower unit off and pressure test it, or have a shop do it.

Did you change the washers for the drain and fill plugs?

Well one question for this then is. how with muffs to run it could water, "suddenly" come in through washers no where near where the muffs are. I could see this if it was run in a tank, but not run with muffs?

(I know that water some how was in the bottle of Lucas 80/90 oil I checked the remaining oil in a clear glass jar)

Either get a pressure test (and vacuum test), or fill it with clean oil and check it after running. Best to run it in a barrel or on the boat. If no water, good to go.
