I just picked up a boat with a 85 HP Merc out board.. Before I fired her up I draned the oil, and clear water flowed for a little bit then a little oil. SO I took some new oil and flushed it out (filled, spun prop by hand) then draned.. I did this twice before i started the motor. Then filled again with clean oil.. I ran the motor for about 5-10 min with a hose and water clamp.. I drained the oil again and it was milky white.. Drained and flushed again, started for about 5-min and it was better but still milky.. Am I leaking water from the water pump do you think or am I still getting all the water that was originally in there out?? The boat has a current reg on it so I assume it was used last season.. Tahnks for your help..

Re: Water in lower unit

I would have the lower unit pressure and vacuum tested. That is the sure way to find where it is leaking.

The most common sources of water intrusion are:

1. Leaking fill/drain plug screw seals.

2. Prop shaft seal.
