water in lower unit

I finally found the drain and fill hole for my 1977 mercury 110 9.8 HP outboard. <br />when I unscrewed the top and bottom screws only clear water came out, not a lot, but very little oil also. any ideas what is wrong ? and what I need to do.<br />thanks, jack

First the easy one.<br /><br />On the fill and drain screws...were there seals on them? or Fishline on the propshaft that is in the seal.<br /><br />Now the expensive ones.<br /><br />The case probebly needs to be resealed...but I bet when its torn down the driveshaft will be rusted just underneath the water pump. This lets the water past the driveshaft seal into the case.<br /><br />This can be fixed at a machine shop. But requires the shaft to be removed.<br /><br />TMD
