I drained my lower unit today the oil looked milky. I changed it in july replaced the drain screw gaskets thinking that might fix it.The lower unit was not overfilled and the oil looked yellow. The motor is a 1978 johnson 85hp boat gets used about once a week for three months. how do you remove the lower unit to check it?

Before you remove the lower unit take it into a dlr and have them pressure and vacuum test it. That will tell you exactly where it's leaking.

Agree with boobie.... i had an issue when i first purchased my 120HP. then i dropped the gear case to do a water pump kit and seen half the gaskets where missing. So i put them in and changed out the shift rod seals since it was open and problem solved.

cheers

I still say have it P&V tested. Then no guess work.

its probably the prop seals. but , like boobie said the only way to know is have it tested. you can't just buy the prop seals, you have to buy the whole seal kit, so you might as well replace them all since you have it apart.

sounds like you should get it pressure tested. mine didn't have an o ring under the metal plate under the impeller. so sounds like thats not ur problem.
