I have a 28 hp johnson that has water in the lower unit. I have purchased the Seloc manual and I would like to know where the water is entering from. I looked at the nylon washers on my drain/fill oil plugs and they look fine. There does not seem to be play in the prop shaft so whats next? Also I bought the boat used it runs like a top I dont know when the water pump was changed last it seems to work fine but how often should it be replaced? I use the boat in fresh and salt water. How hard on a scale of 1-10 is it to change the water pump? (1=easy/10=hard)
Thank you

Even if they look good, I'd start by replacing the nylon washers on the fill and vent plugs. They're easiest. If you don't know when the water pump was replaced, it's a good idea to do it. As far as the degree of difficulty, that depends on you and how much salt water exposer the engine has suffered (bolt and nut corrosion, etc.).
While you have the gearcase removed for water pump and seal replacement, replace the shift rod seal and pressure test the gear case too check the prop shaft seals. I'd also get the OMC shop manual.

c/6
Hooty
