I have a 1965 aristo craft 17' fiberglass boat that has a mercruiser 110 i/o (chevy 4 cylinder basicly same as the nova 4 cylinder engine i was told) I bought this boat last year and quickly discovered that it would overheat at idle so I changed the impeller this year as well as replace the gas tank that had enormous amounts of rust in it and all hoses that come with the gas tank and performed a tuneup (there was no aperent signs of water in the oil and the antifreeze was still in the water lines when I changed the impeller)oil/filter/points/condensor/cap... Took it out on the lake this year and after about the fourth trip I went to take off from the dock and the motor stalled..... Not thinking it was any kind of oil problem I checked the electric system and found that the coil wasnt working great so I replaced that and still couldnt get the motor started after 2 days of this I decided to check everything when I pulled the dip stick it was full to the top with milk I drained the oil and added some more to be sure that the engine was not in hydrolock and it still turned over ok... we got it back home and removed the head and the head gasket is in good shape with no aperant leak by... I havent had the head checked for cracks yet but thinking back to last year I remember that there was a little water leaking out of the side of the manifold but wouldnt this cause a hydrolock if it was leaking by into the oil? and there was no visible water on the cilinders as well as carbon was still there good. I also checked the elbo on the back of the manifold and one side has carbon and the other looks like water has been there no visible cracks...what do I do next??? Im thinking have the head checked and than if it is ok get new gaskets and change the head gasked and the manifold gasket retourque and see what happens is my thinking good as long as the block isnt cracked because the engine never got warm???? Please help!!!!

If the block is cracked the common place is behind the lifter cover. Remove the cover and take a peek. Also you need to flush the block out. You can either run it on automatic transmission fluid or kerosene instaed of engine oil. DO NOT BRING IT ABOVE IDLE OR PUT A LOAD ON IT. KEEP AN EYE ON THE OIL PRESSURE ALL THE TIME.
You may have to do this a couple of times. I have a spare block if you need one.

110 is a oldee! Water in the oil is normally from a bad riser, bad manafold or cracked block. Have the riser and manafold pressure checked. Also a bad gasket on the manafold to riser can do this. Not normally a head problem.

Re: Water in my oil

Ok so just to be sure the riser or manifold can go bad and water can end up in the oil without hydrolock or even water in the cylinders? cause they are still all carboned up and we are talkin 2 days worth of crankin while it was in the water thinkin I had a electric problem (stupid me)..... I had a good friend that sees more of this (backyard mechanic) (I consider myself machanic by necesity) look at the head and the head gasket and he said that the head gasket by no means looks good but since there is no break he cant condemn it right off... he also said that the head might need to be resurfaced.. if it could help I can take some digital pics of them both and post to my web site.... Yep its an oldie but ill tell you up until it wouldnt start this boat ran like a dream... Bad thing is I just spent a ton of money on a top and seats so my fickle wife would actualy get in it with my 2 month old.. lol why do these things happen at the least possible good time good weather good fishing little$$$ arg

Again.......Have the manfold and riser pressure checked. Replace gaskets. Since you removed the head have it magnafluxed for cracks and check for warp. Again..pressure CHECK the riser and manfold!! And to answer your question water can get in and NOT hydrolock. Did I say pressure check the riser and manafold???

Mercrusier 110
And yes it went into the 1965 Chevy II Nova.

You are going to have to go with aftermarket. Take a look here. If I were replacing I would do the riser also. Its usually the first one to go.

Manifold

Their website
