So here we go ive wanted a boat for aslong as i can remember i did some trading and i ended up with a 1984 bayliner Santiago its and inboard/outboard with a 170 hp mercury 4 cylinder! now i dont know alot about boats so bare with me here! i had my boss come over cause he is a big boat guy he pointed out a few small things that i needed to fix which i did one of them was a big round tube on the bottom of the motor was leaking so i replaced the gaskets and it stopped leaking ive been running it at my house getting it tuned up for the summer and i have been using the ears that go over the lower unit when ive had it running!! now for my problem i took it out yesturday ran it for about ten minutes desided to stop and check everything out just to be safe and i took the cover off the motor and there was steam coming out of the air cleaner so i shut it down checked the oil and guess what i had water in my oil!!! why can i run it at my house and not get any water in the oil but as soon as i put it in the river i get water?? also there is a water reservoir on the motor and it is holding water so if my block was cracked wouldnt it all just drian right out into the oil pan? im thinking the head gasket went out? with the water being in the oil and only running it for ten minutes will that ruin my bearings? does anyone else have any thoughts or ideas???

thanks bryan

Drain it asap, and run it with clean oil, hopefully it will save the motor.

Can you put a picture up of the "big round tube"?

"water reservoir on the motor and it is holding water " Is it fresh water cooled, ie. uses antifreeze in the block instead of raw water cooled?

well like i said i dont know alot about boats but my boss said i could run it in salt water or fresh water the water reservoir has antifreeze in it and is holding water just fine then the big tube on the bottom is for fresh water cooling im not sure how it all works lol he said it was a high dollar setup but idk?? now i did the the oil out i should put new oil in and run it? if i do that ill just get water back in the oil? i have started to tear it down to replace the head gasket i was planning on putting new oil in it and crank it over with the coil unhooked and to let the oil circulate and clean up some of the water is this the right thing to do? ill go out and take some pictures right now!!

Howdy,

You have a 470. That is an aluminum block, cast iron head engine.

The big round tube is the heat exchanger (looks like you have the 3" model)

It should be filled with 50/50 anti-freeze.

If you have "water' in the oil, is it clear water or colored?

If the heat exchanger wasn't filled with anti freeze, someone may have filled it with regular water and it has subsequently frozen. If that's the case, you have a large piece of junk in the back of your boat. (the aluminum block is worth scrap value though)

The 470 has a history of many problems including blown head gaskets.....maybe that's your problem.

If you stand by, the 470 crowd will be along in a minute!

Sorry about that,

Re: water in my oil:(

Try to change your title to something like "Merc 470 water in my oil" to get the guys that know that engine and it's problems interested in it.

HT32BSX115 pretty much summed it up.
If it is just clean water, it might be an exhaust manifold/riser problem, if it is an antifreeze water in your oil (IF there is antifreeze in the cooling system) then it just gets ugly quickly.

I'm not familiar with the 470 to be able to give advise.

Here's a page from the manual for possible causes for water in the oil.

Click on the thumbnail to enlarge it.

You can get/rent a cooling system pressure tester from AutoZone or other auto parts store. Drain the cooling system and pressurize at the cap,

thanks for the reply ill be sure to repost my thread! so tonight i changed and the oil and yes it was milky colored anyways got it changed and filled back up hooked up the ear muffs and it fired right up ran it for about two minutes checked the water in the resoivor and it had not and didnt before also a very postive note it did not get any water in the oil and had no signs of steam coming from the carb or anywhere else! im thinking it has to be the exhaust flappers if no water is going in unless im out on the water right?? and what is the make of the 470 im thinking its a ford?

It was Mercury Marine's attempt at making their own (I/O) engine. The only similarity to Ford is they took an off the shelf 460 head and bolted it to their own design aluminum block...which they had experience building..... They also did some other things like trying to integrate the alternator with the flywheel (like an outboard) which in the long run, did not work well as evidenced by all the people that installed aftermarket & separate alternators (which DOES work well)

The original heat exchanger (3") was insufficient so they increased the size to 4" which solved the over heating problems. (if you have a 3" you should change it)

The camshaft arrangement with the circulating pump on the end has been a problem and the iron head on the aluminum block is a problem if you over heat the engine (when was the last time you heard of a marine engine overheating?)

It was a revolutionary design. High HP low weight, efficient. pretty cool engine. I suspect that if they had continued the design and fixed the seemingly minor problems and maybe went to an aluminum head with EFI, it would still be around.

But they didn't.

Good luck,

Rick
