I have twin 350 1990 mercruiser engines. I winterized both last year darined all water from everything hoses, block, risers manifolds anyway one engine is ok the other has about 1/2 quart of water in the oil pan. I drained it out with a suction tube. I left my boat in the water all winter and the marina bubbles the water when the temp drops. Where the heck did this water come from? and what should I do now? One Last thing. when I fogged that engine and had my wife turn the key off and the engine spit a sputtered for about 5 seconds. I heard that can cause water to be sucked back up in somewhere. Just wanted to let you know that.

I'm assuming at this point you changed your oil and filter, Have you run the engine yet to see if the water reappears? If it does you have a cracked block.

Welcome to Iboats :)

Yes I started the engine after i sucked the water out. But Im sure there was some still in the pan. The oil then turned a little milky after runiing it for a about 5 min. I am draining the oil tomorrow and changing it. Is it possible that when we shut the engine off last fall after i fogged it and the engine ran a few seconds that it sucked water in somehow? I heard a mech talk about that before and am just wondering.

If it did run backwards then it would of sucked water up into the pistons and most likely hydro locked. No way that much water would of made it into the crank case without punching a hole in the piston so if the engine runs most likely that didnt happen.

Are you 100% sure the block was drained? Did you probe the drain holes to make sure they were clear when you drained the block?

Yes i did probe the holes and made sure all hoses were empty too.I dont understand where that water could have come. I really took precaution when doing this. Unless the overun sucked some up during the fogging . Im going down today to change oil and filter then gonna run it and keep and eye on the oil level. I will write back later today.

Also The engine turned over very slowly at first try as if it was dragging it took several mins and some wd 40 in the carb for it to speed up and then finally start. seems like some rust may have been on the pistons or somewhere.

I'm thinking it may have been condesation. But also, if it dieseled when you shut it off in the fall and sucked in a little water. It would have sat all winter and the water would have drained into the pan.

I would change the oil out to get rid of the milk. Run it again and get it nice and hot. This will evaporate out any remaining water. Keep an eye on the oil color the first couple of trips. If it turns milky again, you have an issue, if it gets less and less milky every time, I think you should be OK. It may take a couple of oil changes to get all the milk out.

Mike, I drained the oil changed the filter and refilled with fresh oil and ran it for about 20 min. Got the temp to about 150. I then check the dip stick and the oil was clear as ice, No Milk ! I think im going to run it again today but take it for a ride and run it longer then change the oil again. I May Have dodged a bullet. WHEW!!! I think you are right!!!
