have a 1977 galaxie with V8 ford 302, 175 hp. could a blown headgasket be the cause of this

A compression or cylinder leak test will show a bad head gasket.

Yes, or cracked head, cracked block, cracked intake, bad exhaust manifold, bad exhuast elbow.

Needs some serious investigation

I had the same thing happen to mine about 10 months back. It turned out to be bad exhaust manifold i believe what the mechanic said..rusted out from time as i come to fine the exhaust manifold/risers were never changed in 9 years of boats life..So i would remove all that from engine, free it up if its not locked up, start with that asap.
