I have a 1986 2550 Bayliner. I have just re-Engined it from a 225(305 Chevy) to a 280Hp (chevy 350 marine engine). With my old engine, using a 143 degree thormistat, I would start to develope signs of water in the oil when i was in cold water(less than 60)and runing for long periods in the canal (1300RPM). But would tottlely disapear at normal planning speeds. With the new engine, water shows up in the oil at any loading. It never is enough to change the oil to a milky color but in colder areas like value covers and caps the oil looks like lithium white greese. I changed the thermistat to 160 degrees but still develope tracies in the engine cooler areas. Oil appears clear and of good color though does not seem very warm (can hold end of dip stick confortly with out being burned). Valve cover vents to carb are always steaming. This is a new engine with less than 50 hours. It is a marine short block with a Edel Brock Proformer manifold and an marine EdelBrock 500CFM Proformer carburator. I am also runing a marine Prestilite HEI distributor at 8 degrees BTC. All other components are from old engine. Inclueding the 15x17 pitch prop. Engine turns up to 4500RPM.
Is this a normal thing, or do i need to look further. Also my friend just re-engined his boat and is have the same problem!

Re: Water in Oil

Hello,
I have a question for ya.
Do you keep this boat in the water all the time?
If not, can you hook up the ear muffs to the prop and run it with them and not get water in the oil?
I have the same problem.
I have the original engine in my 90 Chris Craft, it is a OMC Cobra 5.8 351.
I started getting water in the oil after I bought it last year and have not been able to figure it out.
I have broke down the heads, replaced the intake manifold, planed the heads and put new gaskets on, and I am still getting water in the engine oil.
The reason I ask about the 'muffs' is because when I run it on the muffs, I can run it for an hours at different idle speeds and no water gets in.
But when I take it to the lake, after about 10 mins, water gets in.
I have resorted to replacing the flappers in the exhaust pipes that keep water from coming back in the exhaust because someone told me that could be the problem because it only happens in water.
Now, these problems seem to happen more when an engine is replaced.
If the engine sits lower in the compartment, it will change the way the water come up to the exhause manifolds and might cause this problem for ya.
I just installed the new flappers in the boat today and am going to hit the lake tomorrow to see how it does.
Just thought I would give ya some help since I could never really get any suggestions on my stuff.
By the way, the old flappers are worn out and do not make a good seal when they are closed.
Hope this helps.
