Recently acquired a Hurricane with a 1998 4.3 Mercruiser that isn't running. Was informed there was water in the oil and that the boat was running when it suddenly quit on the lake so there doesn't seem to be a winterizing issue. Just looking for a starting point to see what type of damage might be done or if it might be an easier fix than the heads or a cracked block. Not sure how this all happened and am troubleshooting in the dark here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Pull the heads and see if its a blown head gasket. If it is the gasket then it probably over heated so look for cracks. Get the water out quick before it rust solid

The water coulda been backwash up the exhaust that seeped past the rings,....

Yep that’s a shame but these problems have to be rectified fast. I was able to do that with my old 4.3. Got the water out fast drained water and changed oil numerous times pickled the engine and installed reman heads a few months later.
