I have a volvo penta 270 outdrive. we took the boot out theis weekend and after that I was checking the oil in the out drive and found water in it. Is there an easy way to check where ithe leaks is at?

Drain the gear lube, and pressure check it. That's about the only way to find a leak.

You also need to disconnect the ujoint bellows from the drive and see if there is water in the bellows. It's supposed to keep water out of the ujoints, and the input shaft seal is not designed to keep water out.
