Water in outdrive? HELP!!!

I took the top cover off my pre-Alpha 165 Mercruiser outdrive to inspect the fluid. And I didn't like what I found: the oil was lite brown and about 1/2 inch below the vent screw. I proceded to drain the oil and it didn't seem like too much came out! When I drained the oil, the drain plug wasn't very tight but I didn't see it leaking in the driveway. It was definitly less than a quart. If there was that little in there, why was it almost filled to the top? I know I put in the right amount (a little more than a quart). I am just putting this boat together and wasn't making the right WOT RPM's, I was only getting ~ 3500. Could this be due to something wrong with the outdrive? I was going to remove the bottom half and see if I miss aligned the o-ring between the 2 halves. Also, the engine was running kinda hot, over 180. Can I remove the lower unit while the outdrive is still attached to the boat?

Re: Water in outdrive? HELP!!!

I think I just noticed another problem. I refilled the outdrive with gear lube and noticed it leaking out of the weep hole on the starboard side of the lower unit towards the front. I thought that this weep hole was for excess water in the lower unit housing. Does this mean that I probably mis-aligned the o-ring inbetween the upper and lower half? I am hoping it's that simple!

Freebee-don't forget that you have to remove the lower unit with it in FORWARD gear-same for reinstall...also-once the lower has had water in it-it might take 3 or 4 oil changes to completely purge the last remaining drops of water...as for the overheat-it sounds like misaligned water tube...as for the weep-sounds like oring....there are two different outdrive mount gaskets-the newer style having an extra oiling hole-make sure you have the OLD style mount gasket set
