Apologies if this is normal, but I am a car guy that decided to tackle a 4.3 project and am learning as I go. I did search for this, but all I could find were threads where people had water in the outdrive oil.

I am pulling the 4.3 next weekend so I pulled the outdrive off today. When I trimmed it down, some water came out the vents at the bottom of the lower unit. The water that drained out was just water, not mixed with oil. I then drained the lube oil out and that looked fine. Clean and no sign of water. Some more water came out when I pulled the outdrive off. This wasn't a bunch of water - I'd say a 1/4 cup total. I then looked inside the boot where the drive connects to the engine and there was some water mixed with oil in there. I have attached a picture.

I have two questions: 1) What is this water from and if it is a problem, what needs to be fixed? 2) What should I be doing as long as I have the outdrive off? Meaning cleaning, preventative maintenance, etc. The boat is a 2007.

Thanks! This board has been a HUGE help so far!

Re: Water in Outdrive (not in the oil)

probably a hole in the u-joint bellows

with the drive off, check the engine alignment, gimbal bearing, all bellows, trim senders, water hose, pressure test the drive, etc...

best to just replace everything back there now, youre gonna have to eventually
