I have a 85 chaperral 187xl with a 3.8l chevy and a stringer 800 sterndrive. I changed the oil in the engine and after the service i hooked it up to the muffs and ran it for a till worm up. I was in the boat and had my son turn the hose on. Not knowing that he turned it on all the way till it stoped is it possible to over pressure the outdrive and get water in the upper and lower gear case. the upper was milkey but when i pulled the plug on the lower it was frash clear water. what should i do i am going to change the water pump. should i change the fluid and put it in the water and see what happens? thanks in advance all help is greatfull

I believe you need to pressure check your drive to find which seal is bad. otherwise you are placing the drive in jeoprady. hose water flushing wont get to the drive oil unless the housing has cracked.

If you do a search here you will find threads where it is explained how to make a pressure testing rig for your drive. It might even be in the FAQ.

Oh boy...Only having water in the lower is bad news. When was the last time it was out on the lake/ocean? When was the last time you checked/drained the gear oil?

See my posts and links about building a pressure tester: Look at post #2: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=568967&p=3906502#post3906502

If you are going to replace the impeller on the upper, go ahead and order an upper seal replacement kit: http://www.boatpartheadquarters.com/GLM-87650-Uppergearcasesealkit-OMC-Stringer-p/glm-87650.htm

They have the absolute best price plus shipping anywhere on the web.

For the lower, the only way to properly pressure test it is to remove the drive entirely and plug up the area around the shift cable as air can leak around it.

For any of this work you will need at the very least, the Seloc manual or the original OMC manual at best. Its late/early for me(graveyard shifter here) and Im tired. Im sure Im missing something and others will hopefully chime in. Good luck!

Oh, also, it is not possible to overpressure the outdrive using the hose and muffs. Now worries there.

so i removed the shaft cerrier. is it only the big o ring and the oil seal on the carrier that can leak? and when the carrier is off the shaft has movement is that normal.

I think that is correct. oring at the far end, lip seal on the prop shaft are the only soft seals on the bearing carrier.... been a while.
