I have a 1984 OMC in/out 3.8L motor on a Bomber 22ft boat that my son has maintained for three years. Last year we took it to a dealer for a tune up and $2200 later when we put it in the water it sputtered and we barely made it back to land. We took it back to the dealer where we ended up paying another several hundred to get the carb rebuilt.
We had a new floor put in last week and bought a pump to drain the old oil so we could put in new oil and potentially get the boat back in the water. When we pumped the oil we got nothing but water from the oil pan. we put a new oil filter on, put new oil back in. When we check the dip stick it shows no evidence of any oil being in the pan. can someone tell me what is happening and make recommendations?

Thanks in advance -- Tenn Tom

Re: Water in the oil pan

Are you saying that no oil came out of the engine at all??????Obviously water in the oil is really bad news, but only water????Is the boat on a trailer and LEVEL??Make sure you have the correct dipstick in.How much water did you pump out????Was the motor warm when you attempted to pump out the oil???AND WHAT did the dealer do for $2200???They certainly should have checked the oil. charlie

Re: Water in the oil pan

Thanks Charlie:
What was done for several thousand dollars was th e replacement of the lower unit and tune up. Obviously this was not done properly.
The oil is not showing up anywhere? There is no evidence of oil on the dip stick and we have used a longer stick which bottoms out and also shows no oil? I have been told the oil could be sitting on top of the pistons and I will pull the plugs and turn it over to see if oil comes out - then I dont know.

I would not crank the motor until you do a little more looking. If you pull thge plugs and there is oil in there it will pour right out.Did you run the motor on earmuffs or with any water source before all this happened???How much oil did you put in after pumping the water out???Charlie--------and put some fogging oil or marvel mystery oil in the carb before you crank it up.You need some upper lube before you crank.
