water in the transom

Hi all
I drilled screw holes at the bottom of the transom of my fg boat to mount a transducer and tea coloured water started coming out (quite a bit of it).

I know that spells trouble, but just how bad is it?
Is there a way to get it all out and dry the plywood or do I really have to rip it out; and the floor while I'm at it?

And the season is just starting!

Not a good scenario. You need to find where it got in from to begin with and then start the repairs.

Did you drill all the way through and maybe it's water from the bilge?
If not....uh oh

Good luck,

Same thing here, I drilled a scrwew hole and it poured out.
How bad is it?
its done.

Probably been that way for a while considering the color of the water.
If you get all the water out and the wood isn't mush it will dry rot anyway.
You might get a season out of it, my splashwell started cracking so I ripped it out and did the stringers too.

Drill another hole, 1/4inch drill bit and examine the wood chips.
Drill the stringers and check them too.

Yeah, I kinda thought it was toast.
Transom still feels solid from the outside, so I'm gonna use it for lake fishing this summer and comes fall, I'll cut her open. I kinda wanted to change her inside configuration anyway ( floor storage, permanent fuel tank and such.)

thanks for the input.

The outside will always seem solid because that's the shell of your boat. go on the inside and see. It's looks like it may be bad. Be careful on the water. If it leaked water from a small hole like that then, I would not venture very far. Good luck.

If this had been a boat under warranty, water in your hull, with transom-mounted transducer mounted by anyone except the manufacturer, the manufacturer would have removed the transducer mount screws. If water had poured out of the screw-holes, would the boat warranty have covered the damage? We know the answer.

It's a shame you had to find water there, Water is stealthy, and most always has done its damage by the time its found.
