water in thr lower unit

1982 35hp long shaft.evinrude<br />i drained the oil from the lower unit,it was discolored and milky.i did not detect any metal in the drained oil.<br /><br />i have a manual for the repair, however it does not go into detail what to look for and the most probable cause.<br /><br />looking for expert advise and suggestions.<br /><br />thanks for the help

The first (and easiest) thing to replace is the gaskets (or orings) on the filler and vent plugs. I'd go ahead and change the l/u lube and replace the gaskets or orings and see if the unit still leaked. <br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

If, after following Hooty's advice, you still find water you need to do a vacume and pressure test to find out where the leak is before tearing it apart. Check Search above if needed.

If previous posts do not work, try changing out water pump with NEW parts and gaskets. <br /><br />Good Luck

The water pump has NOTHING to do with a lower unit water leak. The two are completely separate devices which happen to be in close proximity.
