Water in u-joint bellows ??

Advice please ...... Had the noise in the outdrive when turning left or right and need to replace the gimbal bearing. Finally got the outdrive off ..... bearing was stuck to the shaft ..... had some water and rust in the u-joint bellows, my point is that the bellows all look good, firm, flexible when moved and put a flashlight in there at night looking for signs of light and nothing. Is it possible that water could have entered through a failed gasket between the outdrive and the housing ? The boat was kept in the water before I bought it and the gasket area looked a bit suspect in spots when the outdrive was removed.
Thoughts??
