yea, that's OK.. firmly install back into the upper.

I would check the condition of the rubber grommet the tube goes into, make sure its in good condition and properly installed sometimes they can get a little messed up when shoving the drive up, I like a little grease or Petroleum Jelly or even a little soft soap to ease the reinsertion.

Also carefully check the upper housing for wear, you may want to think about at least getting an upper kit, instead of just an impeller.

getting a complete pump assembly is a great idea !!! The upper housing comes with it.

to separate the lower from the upper, the water tube and guide must be separated. no other way to do it. for a first impeller change. a new water pump housing replacement is a good idea. water pump base too perhaps.

i'm concerned about this statement though. hopefully your referring to the water pump. if your referring to the water pocket cover that the tube engages in, in the upper. be very careful about removing it. while only 4 bolts hold it in place and they are easy to get to. many times, one or more of these bolts can break off during disassembley . don't break them off. if you do and can't get the broke studs out you'll be replacing the upper drive.

also, you may want to get the service manual from the adults only sticky at the top of the i/o forum. that way you'll know the proper procedures for service and also be able to call the parts by their correct name so folks understand what your commenting on.
edit, guess the s/m's are gone forever... watch ebay or the likes to get the s/m ya need... if your not sure which s/m ya need, let us know what year 120/alpha1 and someone will let ya in on which one... alpha1 is for sure s/m #6... if it's an alpha1..
