not sure on your motor, but if your trying to run it at your house I'd just get a big tub from wally world that the lower will fit in and fill it. thats how I run my 125 at home. when I attempted to run it on muffs I never got enough water flow to the top end. in the tub the head stays cool to the touch just like out on the lake. just make sure it's deep enough to cover the anti-cavitation plate

The intake is behind the snout.
On later gearcases there were small intakes at the side of the gearcase body.

In the tub or bucket, the water needs to be 3-4 inches over the cavitation plate.
The water pump sets just above the cavitation plate.
These pumps aren't self priming and need that initial below the water to start pumping.

No Title

A Pic of my 1970 35 HP Chrysler that could be the same as your 1972 45 HP.

1. My intake are screened on the sides of the leg.
2. I experienced 2? higher in my 55 drum w/n pump water due to storing on stands.
3. I added a Tell Tale to see solid water easy on the side vs spray in rear exhaust.
4. Exiting your Tell Tale in the base eliminates pinching line and Etc..
5. Please Post a Pic of your intake.
