Water intake screen

My 1977 Mercury 850 is missing the intake screens and I got weeds in it last time and overheated the motor. Where can I get screens that I can put on from the outside? Or is there another solution?

JB weld on a clean roughed up, greaseless surface might work. The screen is probably SS and hard but you ought to be able to work it over with sandpaper to get a suitable surface for the glue to hold. Or drill and tap holes to suit the screws you can find.

Gee, what screens are you talking about? The lower unit intake was just holes on the original gearcase.

If you boat in saltwater, sometimes the intake passages can get barnacles. To clean them out, remove the waterpump base and stick a skinny screwdriver into the water passage and scrape 'em clean.
