I have a 2001 Merc 90 hp that is getting water in the lower unit When I crank it on muffs it has water coming out above the caviitation plate. When draining the lower unit it is full of water. Since I am running it on muffs= should this be something other that a prop seal ? please advise Thanks

Re: Water issues

Most likely the seals under the pump. Water can only get into the lower four ways, barring a crack in the housing. Prop seal , shift shaft seal, vent/fill screw seals and water pump seals. Running on muffs, only the water pump seals would have water any where near. Prop seal is a very, very remote possibility on muffs. My money is the pump, but do a pressure test. Any may be leaking once you get it on the water. Take care of them now.

I have now noticed that gear oil is leaking out of the water intake vents on the lower unit. Does that still indicate the pump seals??

Re: Water issues

Oil has to go somewhere when the water displaces the oil. Drain the oil, pull the lower unit and pressure test.

yes, gear oil out the water intakes is a good indicator that the driveshaft seal in the waterpump base is leaking. Buy a new pump base, clean up the driveshaft with sandpaper and lube it. Now slide the old pump base up and off and install the new pump base gasket, Oring and pump base.
