I recently bought this 1982 Bayliner with an aq175 motor and a 280 outdrive. The motor was cracked and we repowered it with a 4.3 from an s10 pickup. We are having a blast with it pulling a tube and just cruising around. It does have a small problem in that it takes on a few gallons of water in about 4 hours time. It never gets enough that the bilge pump will pump it out though. There was caulking around the transom plate that was coming off so we cleaned this all off and put a nice bead of clear silicone around here it helped it but it still leaks about half what it did before. I tried tightening the transon bolts but only one was a little loose. I can't reach the bottom ones though. We had the outdrive off when the engine was out because we had to replace the bearings inside the bellhousing. We also replaced the seals in the bellhousing and the driveshaft bellows looked good. It does have a crack in the water return hose that is on the outside of the transom plate. This is the hose that goes through the transom plate and makes a right angle turn then goes through the side of the transome plate. Water comes out of this when the engine is running. I have a new one ordered but it has not come in yet. I really dont think this would allow water to leak into the boat though. Where else could the water be leaking?

The small rubber hose you are referring to is an idle relief hose and cannot be replaced without removing the engine and the exhaust Y pipe. Leaks can be difficult to find. Often a rotten transom will cause the leakage at the bottom of the outdrive cutout. Or it could be leaking somewhere on the motor while it is running. You're going to have to track it down.

The seal around the transom housing is mostly cosmetic.
There is a seal under the shield. It can leak.
The exhaust Y pipe can leak at the bottom?
Get a mirror and light and go looking as the motor is running(does it leak just setting in the water?).

We had the boat out again yesterday. My wife had found a small hole in the front of the hull. It looks like someone may have beached it and caused this hole. It is about the size of 2 pencil erasers place side by side. It is in one of the ribs which I believe are called chines. I put a little silicone in this hole and we got almost no water in the boat yesterday. What would be the best way to fix this hole permanently. Also does it hurt to run the boat with a crack in the idle relief hose? I would like to make it through this season and fix that this winter.

The hole can be fixed with polyester or epoxy resin and some fiberglass. Best to patch from the inside if you have access. Go over to the boat restoration and building forum and ask there. Lots of helpful folks will educate ya on how to do it right. Good luck.
