Water leak on older DP Outdrive

Not sure exactly which unit I have but its on a 91' model boat with a 454. It's a DP Outdrive and I have a water leak coming from what I would call the front transom plate (inside the engine bay). It's on the starboard side and about in the middle of the plate as far as up/down is concerned. It is a hole in the plate and it actually has a crappy .5" or so tube/plug in it, and it's just loose causing water to leak from there, engine does not have to be running. My question is, what is that hole for and is it called the front transom plate? I Couldn't locate it in any parts explosions.

parts diagrams can be found http://www.volvopentastore.com/Engin...--store_id.366

just go to the proper year.

most likely a DP-B for a 1991

take a pic, upload to your favorite photo hosting site such as photobucket and post the link here.

my guess is that it is coming in the alternate shift cable hole

That sounds probable. I know merc stuff, but I'm new to volvo's, but honestly just from what I'm seeing, I like everything about them more, just a new learning curve. I'll get a picture on Saturday when I'm back at the boat. Thanks for the reply.

Here's the picture of the leaking area, starboard side. It appears to be a pin but maybe it is the aux shift that you speak of? Any thoughts? Everything works great on the boat, just after we cruise I push the pin in about a 1/8" to stop the leak, but during a cruise it will back, back out. Thoughts and opinions welcome. Thanks, Justin

After looking further I'm almost 100% sure it's a trim cylinder pivot pin and from what I see on the parts explosion it has a oring, as in the picture and then a screw that is missing? I guess my question, how does this really work? It would appear to me that I could tap that pin in more, put a screw in it, but what keeps it in? Seems simple but confusing as well.

Im guessing that screw in the photo is suppose to have a washer that holds the pin when it's fully pressed into the housing...

It would seem from general design principles that the o-ring needs to be inside the metal bore to be compressed enough to make a radial seal. That said I would expect there to be some sort of washer attached to the pin in question. But to make it seal inside the metal bore, the washer would have another hole offset from center that would be trapped underneath the hex head to the right in the picture. Its a guess but as a guy trying to design an assembly that's how I would attack it. Maybe the pin pushed that far out of the hull/transom causes other issues....can't see from way out here :) but its something to consider as well.

Yea, that's exactly how it works then more I've looked at it. I'll fix it next weekend when we pull the boat for the year. Seems like a easy repair.
