Water leak through outdrive...

Hello.. I am new to owning a boat and have a 88 bayliner with a 3.0 OMC with the GM motor in it. I notice last weekend when I had her in the water that there was water coming in through the bottom area of the outdrive... I am guessing something needs replaced or serviced but was wondering what that may be..

Thanks for any input...

You need to identify exactly where it is coming in from. Could easily be leaking around the drive from a rotten transom...not uncommon for a Bayliner of that vintage.

Ok.. that seems logical.. what would be the best way to find such a leak... my first guess would be at night with a flashlight...

During the day would be better since you have more light. Have you ever pulled your drive off to see what the condition of the bellows are? Might as well start with the easiest thing first.

No.. I haven't taken it apart yet... I am pretty good mechanically and don't mind giving it a try... you're talking about just the drive itself from the "upper" area where it moves up and down.. something like 6 or 8 bolts holding it on...??

Yes. Should be doing that annually anyway.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the transom.
