Hello, i have a 1969 Mercury 40 Hp model 40.
I just corrected a cooling problem and wanted to see how it ran so i got it hooked up to water and started it in the driveway. It started on the fourth pull which was nice and in about 5 seconds i ad good cooling. So i took the cowling off to see inside and everything seemed to be in good working order. But i went to look at the back and ui saw water bubling around the plug. (This is a 1 Cyl. model.) I realy didnt know why this is happening. Im not sure if its a cracked block or just a gasket problem. There is a platearond the cylender where the cooling water goes through and i took that off and it looked ok and the big gasket looked ok but it was a little melted so maybe it needs to be replaced. If anyone could help me out that would be great Thanks!!

Re: Water leakage problem

The gasket you refer to is to seal the water jacket cover.

Replace the gasket, seal around the hole with a known good sealer<----Do not believe that the grey stuff that Mercury has on the gasket will seal...it does not, then reinstall.

TMD
