Water leaking from somewhere, lots of vibration

Hi, I have a 1980 evinrude 70 hp 3 cylinder engine, that I've kept going for a few years now. The latest problem is a water leak near the base of the engine that doesn't affect much when idling, but when motoring causes excessive vibration. Then when I try to get up to full speed the engine wants to cut out completely. If I quicking nudge the throttle down it continues to run but with lots of vibration. Is there some kind of gasket down there? I've worked on other parts of the engine but this area is new to me. Difficult to even describe the area. Here is a link to video of the motor idling. Thanks for any help! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVWqJ95Qr6k

Have you had the lower unit off from the motor? If you have, when you put it back on, did you check the water feed tube (copper pipe) to make sure it was snug inside the upper rubber grommet?

Looks like you have a leak from the water jacket. That is a two part cylinder head with a water jacket covering it. Might be time to pull the head, clean and install new gaskets. look at shop evinrude.com for an exploded view.

Yes, I replaced the impeller, I noticed a bit of water would come out of the exhaust area. But I think the leak that's causing engine trouble is a gasket.

Would that cause the vibration? Is that water mixing with fuel? Why is cutting out at high speed? I'm interested to know, not too familiar with 2 strokes. Thanks

It's entirely possible water is getting in the cylinders through the lower crank seals, bad gasket, or crack in the cooling jacket and mixing with the fuel ie: vibration, and the more throttle you give it the more water gets in, resulting in the motor shutting down.

You could have some side cover gaskets leaking or an inner cover with a hole burned in it letting water into the cylinders. Put a set of muffs on the mtr and turn the water up full blast. Remove the spark plugs, turn your key to OFF position, get a jumper wire to activeate your solenoid and crank the mtr to see if you get any water out of the cylinders.
