water leaks all around ear muffs-normal?

started up 115 hp Evinrude other day. was quite abit of water running out around the muffs. is this normal? didn,t really notice water discharging up farther either, but need to try again to be sure. thanks Gene

I assume you are talking about water muffs to start the motor when you are not in the water.Some water leaking out is normal but you need to make sure enough is getting into lower unit to cool the engine. Try some tape to get a better seal. If all else fails use a trash can or a container of some sort.

Unless the flow rate on your garden hose is exactly the same as the flow rate of the water pump, you will have extra water squirting out. It's better to have extra to insure the motor is getting what it needs. My Merc's cooling system has a big ****-hole several inches below the cowling or cover where you can see a steady stream of water coming out.

If you aren't getting any water out the "pee-hole/tell-tale" within a few moments of starting the engine, STOP the motor!<br /><br />A little leakage around the muffs is fine, but if no water is being sucked in by the motor, you need to replace the impeller.<br /><br />Good luck!

thanks for the responces guys- where is the water supose to exit on a 1982 Evinrude 115 hp? only holes I see are two about 5-6 inches apart directly facing the rear just below the power head? thanks Gene
