Hi all, I'm new here and thanks for all the great info!! My problem is, I have a 1984 Evinrude VRO 90, When winterizing, I found milky oil in the lower unit so I have a water leek to find. I did notice that the pitot nipple on the engine (I don't use it) is loose and stuck on with some silicone and when I run the engine on muffs, water squirts out of the pitot hole. Is there any chance that water could be getting into the lower unit through that hole? Should I just pull the loose nipple out and fill the hole with more silicone? Thanks for all your help!! I haven't the foggiest what you're talking about unless you're confusing the tell tale with a pitot. You're supposed to have water squirting out there, it tells you your water pump is working properly.

Nope, I know of the (peeing hole) up by the power head. This Rude has a "nipple on the leading edge of the mid section of the engine, the former owner told me it was where the hose connected for the speedometer, I tried it, it didn't work so I bought a transome mounted pitot(which worked)
The plastic "hose nipple" is loose as squirts water out (toward the transome) when I run the engine with a hose and muffs. Any Idea what this is? and could it leek into the lower unit? Thanks for your time:)

Just yank that speedometer fitting out of there and tap a new one in. Also purchase the tight rubber cap to fit on its outlet portion.

And no, there is no way that water can gain entrance to the internal portion of the lower unit via that speedometer intake setup.

I've never seen one of those - learn something new every day.

A fair chunk of lower unit leaks are from not changing the drain/fill plug washers EVERY TIME you service the lower unit. If you're just getting a little milky oil and not a whole lot of water, that's the first thing I'd try. Change the washers, change the lube. Check the lube again after the next time you take it out.

Thanks alot guys for the info, I didn't know about that fitting either, I've always had Mercs, this is my first Evinrude.
I will refill the lower unit and and use new washers and take her out for a good run this weekend (going to be pushing 80 degrees here in Wisconsin...ahhh) I will then drain the lower unit and see what we have.
