I have a 40hp yamaha (1995).
While changing the gear box oil, and colected it in a bottle, i found out that there was about 100 ml of water inside the gear box, mixed with the oil...
What might be the problem, and is that something that may cause permanent damage on the gear box?
I will take the outboard to a technician for sure as soon as i find time, but I worry a lot about this, and would appreciate every help or comment...
Thanks guys..

Coming back, just to mention that this is about a 2-stroke engine with 3 pistons.

Probably not a problem It may be as simple as bad gaskets on the drain/fill, vent screws.Replace the gaskets or rings on the screws refill her and use it a few hours and check it for water intrusion. If water is present then it will be necessary to replace the seals.Usually a good idea to replace the impeller while it is apart for seals.I know there are guys that run motors with weak seals that simply change the lube more often and don't have any problems.Of course it's not very inviromently friendly.

u will need to pressure test to find out where the water is entering from

most good shops will put it under water and find where the air bubbles are coming from

Most good shops will reseal and pressure and vaccum test when done. as Spike said, you might want to go ahead and change out the washers on the screws used to change the lube.

The washer on the lower screw, was something that worried me, since i noticed that it wasn't flat, but it tooks the screw's form...
I will change that and then test it on the sea.I suppose that if then i just let the screws loose, i will see if drops of water are first coming out....
Thanks a lot guys...you were very helpfull!!
