Hello, I have a 15 hp mariner that will idle and run at low rpm in gear but dies when you give it some gas. rebuilt the carb but when I took out the plugs there was a lot of water on and in my plugs, way too much to be from fuel and gas and can are clean so I know there is no water in my fuel. I would think head gasket but it doesnt have much of a head, more like a cover plate and thermostate. what do ya think?? could it be a bad crankcase seal suckin water, or a head and waterjacket issue. I would very much appreciate some input on this before I start tearing the whole thing apart. Thank you very much

I would think head gasket. Try doing comp test or just pull the head off it cant be more then a 10 min job

Sound like you have the Merc/Mariner as it has no cylinder head or gasket. Only way water can enter is thru lower seals or exhaust divider plate.Divider plate is easiest to pull and inspect.

ok, thank you very much, I will check the divider and prob put the compression tester on it just to see. can I replace the divider or lower seals without breaking down the crankcase? Thanks again for your input it is much appreciated. I wrench at a small shop in upper mich. alot of carbs and water impellers, gaskets and such I even rebuild lowers, but havent done a total seal job on a power head yet. can you tell me about how many manhours it should take?
