I have a chance to purchase an air cooled 7.5 hp Gamefisher. re they better than the water or is it just the oppisite? I'll be putting it on a 14 ft. jon boat. Does anybody think I'll have any problems. Do the air cooled seem to work OK and what are the negatives about them?
Thanks people.

Most of those air cooled moptors still had a water pump. It pumps water up through the middle section of the motor to cool off the exhaust gasses.

Howdy, Bearcamp.

Air cooled 2 stroke engines run hotter than water cooled, so they require a different oil, and more of it. They are also noisier and lighter.

You would need to use chain saw oil, not outboard oil.

The air cooled outboards I have worked on did not have FNR gears. They were very basic engines. Single cylinder engines just wont idle down like twins.

Bottom line? Light, cheap, no-frills, noisy and smoky. Not my choice in a small outboard.

Good luck. :)
