I have a merc 115. New to me, but older model '85. I was getting the engine running and with the cowling off, noticed that there was water that seemed to be coming from top spark plug. It seems that there is a small hole to the right of the spark plug though. Is this supposed to be there?? Confused.............

Nope - not normal. Suggest a compression check and get the shop manual for your motor.

Mercs are famous for leaking from the water jacket around the sparkplugs.

Re: water out the top??

Thanks for the info guys. I am wondering though on further inspection I found a hole, pre fab above the top spark plug. I am wondering is water supposed to come out run over the fins and cool?? Looks like the hole is supposed to be there. Thanks again!!

hey there, if it just comming out the little hole at the top, the temp sensor is missing, if water comes out around the plugs, you need to replace the cylnder cover gasket, (i just had to do that myself)it is very easy to do.

thanks brixol, does the temp sensor go into the little hole from the outside?? Good to hear.....I thought maybe cracked block, although the hole is prefabbed. Figured something was not quite right. Thanks again.

Re: water out the top??

Find a factory manual or go to a local mercury repair shop and ask. Better safe than sorry. I have never heard of a motor with a water vent, may have to put a plug in it if there is no sensor. I bet if you looked close you would "maybe" find a loose wire hanging around or tucked behind something.

water pressure hole
on my motor (6 cylinder merc) at the top of the motor above the spark plugs there is a hole, into this hole is threaded a hose. The hose runs the length of the boat up to the dash where it connects to a water pressure gage.
saved my motor at least once! gage should read 5-10 psi

I was busy yesterday. Good to see I was missed. :)

That little hole to the right of the #1 plug hole is for a temp sensor - to run a "hot horn". It *cannot* leak because it's a blind hole that leads to nowhere. If you were to keep drilling it deeper, you'd enter ther #1 combustion chamber - not the water jacket.

Your leak is where the waterjacket cover meets the block near that #1 plug area, and apparantly nearer that little hole than not. If you can get it ALL totally clean and dry, some black silicone seal might get it. Removing that whole cover is a seriously big job. Give the sealer a day or two to dry.

If it's just weeping a little there, it's not the end of the world as long as the ignitions isn't being impacted.

And I think the wire is brown, perhaps with a stripe though. My boat is in storage so I can't readily look.

-W
