While out boating this past weekend, my boat was running funny at speed. I finally noticed that there was water coming in over the stern while the boat was on plane. It looked like it was being forced up the stern from the prop....what would be causing this?

Was this right after the outboard was lowered?

Or is this an I/O? Or inboard? Or V-drive? Or jet?

Oh sorry...I guess i shoulda put that in there. Its a 19' bowrider, with a 85 hp outboard. No trim tabs.

I mean no other tabs...(side mounted add-ons) just the tilt/trim on the outboard.

Is this boat new to you? Or have you had it awhile?

Sounds kindof like the motor is too low on the transom, and is pushing the midsection through the water.

Where is the anti ventilation plate of the motor, in relation to the bottom of the hull?

Have you checked the foam? Do you know if it's dry? One possibility is that you could be carrying a shifting weight.

We were in FORWARD...RIGHT? Sorry, couldn't resist that one. Any chance that you might have hit something, and the drive was no longer "down" ?

Forward, lol...cute. Yes, I was in forward....although the effect was very similar to driving to fast in reverse. The foam idea maight be worth checking into. Yes, the boat is new to me....and this was the first time I had more than three people in it....i had five, two adults three kids. I'll also check the morot height...if memeroy serves the fin above the prop should be even with the bottom of the hull, right?

Re: Water over the stern?

My Merc still does what you describe, even after raising it on the transom. It does not do it nearly as bad now, and I plan on raising it another 1/2 to 3/4 inch. What is happening on mine is while planing at cruise speeds, there is just enough water contact with the area above the cavitation plate to cause a small fan of water to be sprayed straight up. At full speed, there is not very much spray. I am sure in your case raising the motor will aleviate the problem or at least reduce it. This problem can also be affected by trim as well. The more you trim out, the less the problem will be, so you should make sure you are trimming properly. The cavitation plate in most cases is best located between 1/2 to 1 inch above keel, depending on boat/motor. Too high and you can have prop ventilation and cooling issues, too low and you are just dragging too much metal in the water. Good luck...
