One of the only things I have not done to my pre-Alpha drive was inspect the water pocket cover.

I read in other posts that if this isn't in good condition that it could cause poor cooling.

Well, I just seperated the 2 halves and removed the water pocket cover. It didn't appear to be in very good condition, but when I checked the mating of the water tube it seemed to be ok. I am going to replace it and the gasket.

Anything special to look out for here? Seems pretty straight forward.

Re: Water Pocket Cover, pre-Alpha

FreeBee, found this on another site, hope it helps.

This not the complete bulletin as published
MCSB 83-15

MERCRUISER I WATER POCKET COVER SCREWS SEALANT RECOMMENDATION
The water pocket cover attaching screws (Figure 3) can be extremely difficult to remove when stern drives are operated in salt, polluted or mineral-laden waters. To facilitate easier removal of these screws, the screw threads are now being coated with Quicksilver Perfect Seal (92-34227) at the factory. This also should be done as a normal service practice whenever water pocket cover is removed. ( See diagram )

Notes: The purpose as stated (above), centers around the issue of corrosion build up at this location of the upper drive. Any time a water pump repair is done to any of these units, or an unexplainable "overheating situation", that a water pump repair didn't fix, this water pocket adapter should be removed and checked for corrosion, not only at the bolts, but primarily at the gasket surface. This plastic adapter cover will warp and leak. Use a flat plate and check for warp. Replace if warped. Clean the upper drive housing thoroughly, using a long screw driver to remove the old gasket and corrosion. [try not to scratch the paint ] Always use new gasket and apply a thin coat of perfect seal to both sides of the gasket and bolts.

Using "Anti sieze" on stainless bolts in aluminum is just like welding.....They will never come apart again.

Good info........thanks.

I wonder if "anti sieze" will work just as good?

I'm pretty sure I used it before on bolts on other lower units......never had a problem. Is there a certain type of anti sieze that will cause a "welding" problem with aluminum?

Anti sieze has zinc in it and acts as an anode and increases corrosion. Corrosion causes fitting, bolts, props, anything to corrode.
The Mercruiser manual gives information on what to put on bolts. I normally use the Mercruiser PerfectSeal on all bolts on the drives. Works great and can be taken apart 5 years down the road. Even when the drive is in salt water,
