What is the best location to connect the water pressure gauge tube on my motor. 1989 evenrude 225 looper.

Re: Water pressure gauge

Tee it into the tell tale. You'll get all sorts of arguements regarding best location but in the end, that's where the gauge manufacturer will tell you to install it unless there is a water jacket port that's not being used. What you are looking for is a reading at idle and WOT with a new impeller. As time goes buy, any deviation from those readings indicates impeller degradation. There will be very little difference, if any, in where you connect it.

Re: Water pressure gauge

On a looper you'll want to read the pressure from the adaptor plate. Reading from the overboard indicator will show about 0 at idle to about 10 lbs at wide open.

On an 89 V6 looper there will be a small line coming from the adaptor plate going to the water control valve behind the throttle arm. You can T into that.

Assuming you keep an eye on the water pressure for changes over time, is that a good enough signal for when to replace the impeller?

Re: Water pressure gauge

Thanks for the advise, I have them t'ed into the adaptor plate as mentioned by Dhadley. I get a low reading on one motor and none on the other, however if I close of the tell tale pressure is good at idle and ot WOT. Any ideas.

Are the t-stats in? Is the complete cooling system in tact as produced from the factory?

Re: Water pressure gauge

T-stats are in with new diaphragms, the only thing is I have removed the spring and vernathium from the inside of the t-stats. I don't have a temp problem just wanted to see how to read the best pressure possible.Temp at WOT is 160-170.

Re: Water pressure gauge

I've never done that so I really don't know how it affects the water pressure reading. I use the newer style system on my 1990 200 (same as your 89 225) without the throttle control water valve and the T-stat assembly with the newer cap and no diaphram. It idles about 3-5 and is at 25 at around 3000 rpm.

It does not have the high pressure pump. When we bought the boat a few months ago it had just been serviced with a new standard pump kit.

Re: Water pressure gauge

Can you elaborate on the system, as what parts were changed and what is the advantage.

Re: Water pressure gauge

Look at the 93 & newer parts diagram. It simply cleans up the way the motor looks. You get rid of the control valve and all those hoses.

You'll need the cap & spring and then unscrew the diaphram and use a gasket on the cap. Do not mix up the years on the cap & spring. They are a set. Some motors use a different cap that has a different depth and therefore a different spring.Whatever year you choose, get the cap and spring from that year.

Re: Water pressure gauge

Dhadley, I looked at the newer version and I see what you mean. I changed the water pump and installed the high pressure #5001595 and only got 1/2 to 1 psi reading. I then replaced the spring and vernatherm and wow now have 6 psi at idle. I just ordered new t-stats, seals, diaphrams and head gaskets to make double sure all is working as best as possible also want to look in the cylinders. Can the control valve be eliminated without going to the new system ?. What would be good WOT pressure with the parts that I will be replacing.

Re: Water pressure gauge

I have now replaced the water pump in the port motor with the high pressure unit recomended by Dhadley, the starboard motor still has the regular pump. I have also replaced the t-stat's, diaphram, seal and headgaskets. At idle on the hose both motor have good pressure 3-6 psi (6 psi is the port motor), my question is after running on the hose for about 15 min. I can keep my hand on the exhaust cover (warm) and the starboard head's (#1 cyl) I can hold on for about 10 sec.on the top of the t-stat's housing, but on both motors the port heads (#2 cyl) can only hold 2-3 sec. very hot. I have temp gauges that are getting the reading from the starboard heads, is this normal due to the off set of the cylinders or is something wrong.the temp guages never passed 125-130 during the test period. I plan to test the boat this weekend weather providing, would also like to know what would be the temp at WOT.
As allways your help is greatly appreciated.
