This picture shows a water pressure gauge line "Tee'd" into the tell-tale on a much newer motor but the concept is the same. If there is a threaded plug that opens into the water jacket you can use that as well. In the picture, the large hose is the tell-tale and smaller tube is the water pressure gauge line.
